Ask a Trail Guide
-
Can I ask you anything about the trips?
Yes!
-
What kinds of clothes and gear do I need to bring?
Our Gear List (.pdf) tells you everything you'll need.
-
Can I bring my pocket knife, or a Swiss Army knife with me?
No. There is no need for knives on the trail, and too much risk of injury to your fingers. Leave it at home with the ipod.

Our church is considering a trip and I heard you use 8 man canoes. Is that right? What canoes do you use? Company, model, lenght, weight? (ie, 42 lbs, 70 lbs)
That is a good question. At the BWX, we use 17 foot, tandem canoes from We-noh-nah named "Boundary Waters" & "Spirit II". Both of these models are made from Kevlar® Flex-core and weigh 53 lbs. In a full group of nine people, we will use four of these canoes. Three of them will have two people in them, and one will have three people. The third person is called "the duffer."
Here is a link to learn more about the canoes in our fleet: http://www.wenonah.com/products/template/product_detail.php?IID=17&SID=8a6a832297209fa1bae050d164ec4cf8.

On your packing list, no sleeping bags? Also, it would be hard for me to go into the woods without my Leatherman. Is it not on the list because you have to deal with young adults/kids and sometimes a knife is "not good"? Thanks.
You are correct, sleeping bags and Leatherman's are not on our packing list. The reasons for this is that the BWX provides all of the equipment for your trip, including sleeping bags. If you prefer to use your own, feel free to bring it. We ask that knives are not brought on trail, due to the high risk of personal injury. When people widdle, far too often, they widdle their fingers too!

I'm considering bringing a group of students from our church in Aug 2010. I'm a little confused on the 9-to-a-group-limit. How many can I bring? Let's say I could bring a group of 27, would I have to say no to 18 in order that 9 of them could go or would you simply divide the 27 into 3 groups of nine with different leaders?
Good question. We can serve up to six groups at a time. Each of our groups are made up of eight people. So, we can serve up to forty-eight people per week. These groups are separate and will not interact with each other while they are on the trail, in accordance with the US Forest Service rules and regulations.
